Inspiring the Next Generation at Frontenac, Lennox and Addington Science Fair (FLASF)

Connecting with youth and inspiring the next generation of innovators is one of the best parts of my job. Recently, as I stood in front of the eager faces at the Frontenac, Lennox and Addington Science Fair (FLASF) on March 22nd, 2024, alongside my friend and colleague Cedric Pepelea, I couldn't help but feel a flutter of excitement. It was another opportunity to connect with young minds and empower them with real stories of action against climate change and sustainability initiatives.

We were invited to present "Hope Through Action” , real-world examples of sustainable innovation throughout various sectors. Instead of dwelling on the challenges posed by the climate crisis, Cedric and I chose to share our personal journeys, successes, setbacks, and the lessons we've learned along the way. We wanted students to understand that change is within their grasp and that anybody has the power to enact meaningful change, both small and large. During our presentation, students discovered the critical connection between their scientific explorations and the broader fight against climate change; which we hoped would encourage them to harness their knowledge and creativity skills to make a tangible difference in the world around them.

As we spoke with the students, we were happy to learn that we helped spark curiosity and inquisitive questions. It served as a reminder that these young individuals are not merely the leaders of tomorrow; they are already leading today, with innovative ideas and an inexhaustible drive to enact positive change! It is young minds like them that make me hopeful for the future.

Events like FLASF remind us that the power to enact change lies within each of us. By nurturing the curiosity, creativity, and determination of our youth, we lay the groundwork for a brighter tomorrow, one where hope transcends into action, and where our collective efforts propel us toward a more sustainable and equitable future for all.
